You should always plane your drone flight before you leave your home. Consider that as a time saver and make it as rutine.
After so many years as professional photographer I learned and experienced a lot. I was thinking that all this experience was in my advantage even here. It has to do with planing, composing, photographing and post processing. Now I just had to add a few more variables in my calculations. For example, is it allowed to fly in the area, weather conditions, huge obstacles, people, animals… etc.
Why do I to plane my flight
It’s many places when you are not allowed to fly above at all! For example; airports, military areas, prisons has total flight restrictions. Some places has limited or temporary restrictions. In order to not to plane drone flight at the wrong place its many useful applications.
One of them is DJI owned app. It’s DJI GO 4 used for flying, connecting with your drone, with latest updates, maps etc. In section with GEO Zones you can clearly see all prohibited areas and areas with restrictions. With all this informations it’s much easier to plan your safe flight. Even so you need to cheek with your local authorities if any huge events are planed with plenty of people. If you by mistake end in this kind of situation you should abort your flight.
Sometimes you can fly but with limitations
At the places with partly restrictions you are allowed to fly but with limitations. Most of the time it’s limited by how high you are allowed to fly. In those situations DJI app will not allow you to fly higher than allowed. In case when you have planed to photograph hight buildings or trees its good to check before if you can fly high enough to accomplish your task,
I planed my flight and get good results
If possible it’s always good to have a friend or someone you know to be with you. Especially in the begging when you are learning. If your friend has some experience with drones its even better. Listen what he or she has to say and even if their information doesn’t make any sense for you right now maybe it will help you some time in the future.
My plan was to fly my drone and photograph small castle called Kastellet located at Kastellholmen. The weather was good for flight and the sky was cloudy. My friend Rostam was with me and he was planing both to fly and assist me with my flight. We didn’t wanted to fly at the same time and he was the first in the air. I was carefully observing and helping by following his drone all the time. The island had a plenty of high tress which has to be avoided. During the summertime the trees provide a shade and can cover the view as well.
We both had a time to fly twice before the sun went down. The light was to low and we packed our drones. If you are not experienced pilot I don’t recommend flying in pore light conditions. Most of the drones shut down their sensors and you are on your own. Sensors help you to avoid obstacles an keep your drone safe of crashing and hitting unwanted objects.
