When gold and brown dominate the ground then you fly in the sky… Djurgården from above looked fabulous in late afternoon light.
Todays adventure started with a phone call from my friend Rostam. He asked me if I wanted to join him to island called Djurgården and fly our drones together. I had nothing booked for the afternoon and the weather was good. During the fall most of the trees turn in gold and brown tones and knowing that I agreed to join him. At least 80% of the trees on the island would be affected by the season. I have never seen that from above and was happy for that.
Here in Stockholm we have really good public transportation which we used to get there. We decided to visit South-East part of the island which we knew had a lot of forest.
How the hard wind affects your photography
We had a heavy clouds most of the time and the wind wasn’t on our side. Probably around 10 to 14 m/s which created sometimes problem. Mostly when capturing wide panoramas.
Usually when hard winds are coming from the front side direct to the gimbal and camera drone need to work harder to stay at the same position. I that case many of the drones tilt the whole body downward which create little problem for camera. Not to camera directly I would say, the part of the front propellers ends on the photos in the upper corners. It’s easy to correct when you have just a sky but in other situations it can take time to fix it.
If you turn the back side of your drone against the wind your camera would work better. But even this time it wouldn’t be some affection. Still your drone need to work hard to keep the same position by tilting it downward which move you camera upward. You will lose parts of the your foreground but on the other hands you will gain more of the sky.
Same technique can be applied when you are making a video. You fly backward and later at home you reverse the video. It’s not the same as when you film it frontally! But in difficult situations it’s better than having your front props captured on your film.
If the wind is even harder and you are getting warnings than its better to not a fly at all.
The sun amplified gold and brown
The wind stayed the same but the clouds started to clear at the right side. The sun showed up and we decided to move closer to the costal side. As you probably know the island is surrounded by Baltic sea as the huge parts of Södermalm and Stockholm. But after the Slussen which is the end of the water front at photo below start the lake and fresh water.
I really liked how the sun lightened the top of the trees and reflected in the sea. It’s not easy to photograph against the light without blowing the highlights and still preserving the details in shadows. HDR technique is needed and you photograph 3 photos with different exposure… I will explain more this way of taking the photos in the coming future.
Djurgården in gold and brown colours was magnificat experience. In the end we had a nice day and went home with plenty of good photos.
